Recovering from Reconstructive Foot Surgery: My Lapiplasty Journey & Must-Have Products
At the end of May, I finally did something I had been putting off for more than six years — I had reconstructive foot surgery. My procedure was a combination of Lapiplasty, joint reconstruction, and joint fusion. It was a long time coming, and now that it’s behind me, I’m (hopefully!) on the road to recovery.
I’ll be honest — this has been a much longer recovery than I anticipated. I’ve been dubbed a “slow healer,” and patience has definitely been a required skill. There have been moments of frustration, pain, and doubt, but also small wins that remind me I’m moving in the right direction.
Along the way, I’ve found a few products that have truly made a difference in my comfort, mobility, and healing. Whether you’re preparing for your own foot surgery or recovering from any major procedure, these might help you too.
1. Compression Socks
I travel for work, so compression socks were already part of my routine — but after surgery, they became non-negotiable. They help manage swelling not just when flying, but also in everyday life. I can feel the difference by the end of the day when I wear them.
2. Vitamin E Oil
After surgery, my skin was rough, dry, and bruised. I wanted something that would help with both the look and feel of my skin, and Vitamin E oil came highly recommended. It softens the skin and helps reduce scarring over time.
3. Silicone Scar Sheets
I’m not going to sugarcoat it — my scarring was intense. I even nicknamed my left foot “Frankenfoot” at one point. These silicone scar sheets have been a game changer. They’re reusable, easy to use, and have made a visible difference.
4. Shower Stool
Never in my 30s did I expect to be using a shower chair — but here we are. I was non-weightbearing for 8 weeks, and even now (over 12 weeks later) I still don’t feel totally confident standing for a full shower. This stool has been a lifesaver for both safety and comfort.
Final Thoughts
Recovery isn’t linear — some days you’ll feel like you’re making big progress, and others it may feel like you’re stuck. But small adjustments, the right tools, and listening to your body can make the journey easier.
If you’re about to go through Lapiplasty or another reconstructive surgery, I hope my experience helps you feel more prepared. Healing may take time, but every step (even the tiny ones) counts.
